NJ Minor League Baseball Paterson Stadium Jackals new home
Inside look at historic N.J. ballpark’s $100M revival as monument to Negro Leagues
It’s time to play ball once again at Hinchliffe Stadium, the historic venue near the Paterson Great Falls national park that is set to reopen as a monument to the storied days of the Negro Baseball League and the new home of the New Jersey Jackals minor-league team.
The Art Deco stadium with its distinctive Spanish tile trim has been fully restored. A new mat of artificial turf for the multi-purpose field has been laid down. And home plate is almost in the same spot as in the days when Larry Doby and other Negro League ballplayers found a place to play at Hinchliffe.
Built in 1932, Hinchliffe is one of a handful of stadiums still standing where Negro Leagues played.
The glory days of Hinchliffe were long ago in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, when thousands would routinely walk through the turnstiles to see baseball, football, boxing, concerts and even auto racing.
The building was condemned by the Paterson Board of Education in 1997. Until recently, Hinchliffe was a crumbling relic of those bygone days. Its walls were stained by graffiti. The huge horseshoe-shaped grandstand was cracked and broken.
The stadium that once held 10,000 cheering fans stood silent and empty, holding only memories. Now those days are gone.
On Friday, Paterson is expected officially cut the ribbon on the next chapter of Hinchliffe Stadium, following a more than $100 million restoration funded mostly through state tax credits. The next day, the New Jersey Jackals will play their home opener against the Sussex Miners.
The restoration of Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson is approaching completion and reopening as the home field of the New Jersey Jackals. The stadium opened in 1932 and was condemned in 1997. In addition to the stadium revival, the project includes senior housing, a parking deck, a food court and a museum dedicated to the Negro Leagues and the civil rights struggle. The project, which is not finished, was originally budgeted at $94 million, but is now estimated to cost $104 million due to cost overruns.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said the cost is worth preserving a vital piece of history and reviving a stadium that will not only be used by the Jackals, an independent team in the Frontier League, but by Paterson students.
“Hinchliffe Stadium is a national treasure and tells the story of the struggle for racial justice and American integration,” said Sayegh, who assembled the restoration plan. “It is a real field of dreams where legends once played, and our youth will carry on their legacy.”
Sayegh, a big baseball fan, visited the fully restored Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2009 and was inspired by the potential of Hinchliffe.

Hinchliffe was home field for two Negro League teams during the 1930s, the New York Black Yankees and the New York Cubans.
The Newark Eagles played some games at Hinchliffe as well, and just about all the major Black baseball stars played at Hinchliffe, including future Hall of Famers Satchel Paige, Monte Irvin of East Orange and Paterson’s Larry Doby.
Doby, a star at Eastside High School, tried out for the Newark Eagles at Hinchliffe in 1942 at the beginning of his historic journey to the Major Leagues.
Four years later, after a stint in the Navy during World War II, Doby broke the color line in the American League, 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson of the National League’s Brooklyn Dodgers became the first black player in Major League Baseball.
“Larry Doby walks into Hinchliffe as an amateur ballplayer, and he leaves as a professional,” said Brian LoPinto, a Clifton resident who founded a nonprofit, Friends of Hinchliffe Stadium, in 2002. “If that’s not a ‘Field of Dreams’ all over again, I don’t know what is.”
If he were alive today, Doby would have turned 100 this December. Doby died in Montclair, where he lived for many years.

LoPinto, 44, was a student at William Paterson University in 1997, when the Paterson Board of Education shut Hinchliffe after a section of the playing field collapsed into a sinkhole. He grew up in Paterson not far from Hinchliffe, and knew the story about Negro Leagues baseball and the legends like Josh Gibson, dubbed “The Black Babe Ruth,” who played there.
After the closure, the state-appointed school superintendent at the time, Laval Wilson, offered the school board a stark choice: spend $4 million to knock the stadium down, or $4.8 million to fix it up.
The school board chose neither, and for the next 25 years, Hinchliffe languished, falling apart with no money to fix it and the spectre of demolition always in the air.
The Friends of Hinchliffe Stadium – mainly LoPinto and local activist Flavia Ayala – tried to keep the hope for preservation alive by first raising awareness, then money.
“I figured, let’s do the next logical thing, and get Hinchliffe placed on the National Register of Historic Places,” LoPinto said.

Much to the group’s disappointment, Hinchliffe was initially designated as a landmark with only “local” significance – a nice honor, but it didn’t recognize the stadium’s role in the struggle for Black equality, which is part of the American story.
It wasn’t until 2013 that Hinchliffe was designated a national landmark. A year later, Congress adopted a bill by Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. to include the stadium in the boundaries of the Great Falls national park, which added a layer of federal protection to Hinchliffe.
Sayegh picked up the ball when he was Paterson city councilman, then ran with it after he was elected mayor in 2018.

The Hinchliffe restoration has a decidedly hometown feel.
One of the developers, Baye Adofo-Wilson, grew up in Paterson and ran track at Hinchliffe when he was a student at Passaic County Technical Institute. His company, BAW, is working with RPW Development Group on the project.
The Jackals owner, Al Dorso, brought professional baseball back to Paterson when he moved the team from Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair.
Dorso also owns the Sussex Miners, and the two teams will square off at Hinchliffe on Saturday for opening day of the Frontier League season. The Jackals are scheduled to play 54 games at Hinchliffe through August.
Another Paterson entrepreneur, Chuck Muth, donated $5 million to Montclair State University to establish a museum at Hinchliffe that tells the story of the Negro Leagues and the struggle for civil rights. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City is working with Hinchliffe to set up the museum, which is scheduled to open in September.
“To see this stadium come back to life is really special,” said Bob Kendrick, the director of the Kansas City museum. “The City of Paterson deserves a huge tip of the cap. They certainly have our gratitude for what they’ve done, and we’re looking to all those opportunities for enlightenment and education.”
A ceremonial ribbon-cutting is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m., more than 90 years after the original dedication on Sept. 17, 1932.
Like the groundbreaking in 2021, this week’s ceremony is expected to draw some big names from Major League Baseball. They’ll get the first glimpse of Hinchliffe’s funky dimensions - a short porch with high net fence in right field, and a cavernous left and center field with Garret Mountain the background and the Great Falls just below.
The Paterson school district owns Hinchliffe, and under a deal with the city, gets to use the field for 180 days a year. Maintenance is the responsibility of the developer, BAW, and the school district gets a 50% cut of net proceeds of the stadium, said Paul Brubaker, a spokesman for the Paterson school district.
Sayegh has a big vision for Hinchliffe beyond baseball to include concerts, soccer, track and football, highlighted by the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl clash between Paterson Eastside and JFK high schools.
Sayegh sent a letter and met with residents who live around Hinchliffe to talk about the reopening, which is going to bring crowds and more traffic into the neighborhood.
“I think the champagne gets popoed on May 20 for the first Jackals game,” LoPinto said. “It will bring the story full circle. Paterson has always been a baseball town, and now baseball is back, and that’s a good thing.”

Inspector
1 INT. ARROW'S OFFICE - HAMUDDERS - LATE AFTERNOON 1
INSPECTOR and ARROW sit at the OFFICE DESK. ARROW fidgets
about nervously.
INSPECTOR
Mr. Bentley, today's result is not your doing. The problem is our
beloved Hamudders. We've been on the
wrong side of the public imagination
for far too long. In turn, we're
facing a total extinction event.
ARROW
... Is Hamudders closing, Inspector?
INSPECTOR
It is highly probable. However, there is a project we've discussed at H.Q.
A last resort if you will. An idea we
believe could raise our sales to the
sky and beyond...
Suddenly, the PHONE rings. ARROW answers then hangs it up
quickly.
ARROW
... Keep goin' Inspector.
INSPECTOR Mr. Bentley, we are going to be reselling Flapjax to the public. And for the big debut event, we'd like you to take the lead.
ARROW Woah... Inspector. That's uh-An ambitious order. And I'm deeply honored. But uh, weren't the Flapjack-
INSPECTOR
FlapJAX, Mr. Bentley! With an X! An updated recipe to our most popular item of all time. What better way to re-grab the public's attention than with something they already know and love?!
ARROW
Well, okay, but, but weren't, and I'm just playing devil's advocate here
sir, but weren't the Flapjacks called off because of -
INSPECTOR stands, kicking his chair back. ARROW flinches.
INSPECTOR Because of that vicious, low balling, American Chicken Bunker, Mr. Bentley! Horrific rumors were spread about Flapjacks from sheer envy! And soon, everything came crashing down under us.
ARROW stands, kicking his chair back. INSPECTOR flinches.
ARROW
Dang! I knew it! I knew something was up! The medical reports were
inconsistent at best!
INSPECTOR
But Mr. Bentley, we can win them back! We can rewrite Hamudders
history and correct the initial wound. That is... if you're up for
the challenge.
ARROW leans forward. Inspector... I'd do anything to save the company that saved me.
INSPECTOR
Pauly would be proud.
ARROW flashes his toothy grin.
